Import files into Nodary
Bring a folder, a ZIP or single files into a project as linked documents. You see the tree before anything is created, and nothing that already exists is overwritten.
What Nodary imports
- Markdown and text files (.md, .markdown, .txt), with their headings, lists, tables and code.
- An Obsidian vault: [[wiki links]] become links between documents, and links that lead nowhere are listed.
- A Notion export as a ZIP: Notion’s ids leave the names, callouts and toggles come through, and a database becomes a sheet with its pages under it.
- A Confluence or wiki export in HTML, and Word files (.docx).
- CSV tables, each as a document holding a sheet.
- The pictures, videos and PDF files the documents use, and a Nodary archive (.zip) with its links and editable sources.
Import a folder or a ZIP
- Open the project’s map and choose Import, then the Folder or ZIP tab.
- Drop the folder or the ZIP, or use Choose a folder or Choose a ZIP.
- Read the preview: the tree of documents, the files they use, and what will be left out and why.
- Choose the project to import into, or a new one, and what to do when a document with the same title exists: Use it (import beneath it) or Keep both.
- Select Import. Documents are created first, then files are sent, then content and links are written. You can pause and resume.

Links, pictures and folders
A folder becomes a folder of documents, or the children of the document with the same name beside it, as a Nodary archive writes them. Links between imported files, and to their pictures, are rewritten to point at the new documents once they exist.
A document’s title comes from its front matter, then its first heading, then its file name.
Spreadsheets and pasted content
To bring a table into a document you already have, insert a sheet and choose Import CSV or Excel: you pick the sheet of a workbook, check each column’s type and keep leading zeros before anything is written.
Paste from Google Docs, Word or a spreadsheet and headings, lists and tables keep their shape; paste a screenshot and it becomes a picture. To bring a Google Doc in whole, download it as Word or HTML and import that.
Limits
- Up to 200 documents and 300 files per import; import a bigger export in several parts.
- Each text file up to 2 MB, each picture, video or PDF up to 50 MB.
- Your plan’s document limit applies: on Free, 10 documents and folders. The preview says how many documents the import creates and how many your plan still allows.
- Existing documents are never changed.
If something goes wrong
- The connection drops: the import waits and goes on when it is back. A document the server already created is reused, never duplicated.
- The import stops at your plan’s limit: choose the same files again once there is room, and it picks up where it stopped.
- A file is left out: the report says why, for example a kind of file Nodary does not import, or more text than a file may hold.
To see a vault or a folder of Markdown as a map before you import it, with its broken links, use the free document map: it runs in your browser and sends nothing.
Questions
Can I import a whole Notion workspace?
Yes, from Notion’s export as a ZIP, up to 200 documents per import: import a large workspace in several parts. Databases become sheets with their pages under them, and the report lists anything left out.
Do my Obsidian links survive the import?
Yes. [[Wiki links]] between imported notes become links between documents, and those that lead nowhere are listed so you can fix them.
Can I import Google Docs?
Download them as Word (.docx) or HTML and import those files, or paste a document’s content straight into a Nodary document.
Will an import overwrite my documents?
No. A document with the same title is either used as the parent of what is imported, or kept beside a numbered copy. Nothing that exists is changed.
