Connect ChatGPT to Nodary
ChatGPT connects to Nodary as a custom MCP server, what OpenAI used to call a custom connector. Once it is added, ChatGPT reads and writes your workspace with your permissions, on the web.
Before you start
- ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu, on the web: custom MCP servers do not work in the mobile apps.
- On Business, only admins and owners add custom MCP servers. On Enterprise and Edu, admins and owners can, and so can members an admin gives the Create plugins with MCPs permission.
- On Pro, ChatGPT connects custom MCP servers with read and fetch permissions only: it can read Nodary, not write to it.
- OpenAI’s help article offers no custom MCP servers on Free or Plus.
- A Nodary account. The MCP server is in every plan; on Free, while the workspace stays within the free plan: 1 project, 10 documents and folders, 2 members. ChatGPT spends no Comets: it uses its own model.
No workspace yet? Create one, then come back to connect.
Create a free workspaceAdd Nodary in Plugins
- In ChatGPT, open Plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
- Enter the name Nodary and, if you like, a description.
- Under Connection, enter the server address:
https://nodary.ai/api/mcp - For authentication, choose OAuth. There is no client ID or secret to enter: ChatGPT registers itself with Nodary.
- Read the risk warning, tick I understand and want to continue, then select Create as a plugin and review the tools ChatGPT found.
- Sign in to Nodary when ChatGPT asks, and approve the access.
For the whole workspace
An admin or owner who has tested the connection can publish it for the workspace. Each person then signs in with their own Nodary account the first time, so ChatGPT always acts with that person’s permissions.
Sign in and choose workspaces
Nodary’s consent page names the app that asks and the address it will be sent back to. Sign in if you are not already, then choose the workspaces ChatGPT may reach: with one workspace you pick it, and with several none is ticked for you, so tick each one ChatGPT may use. If you signed in more than 10 minutes ago, Nodary asks for your password again. Approve, and the browser hands you back to ChatGPT.
ChatGPT then acts as you: it sees and changes only what your role allows, in the workspaces you ticked. Its access lasts 60 minutes at a time and ChatGPT renews it on its own.
Use Nodary in a conversation
Install the plugin, start a new conversation, type @ and pick Nodary. The choice applies to that message: mention Nodary again when a follow-up needs fresh data from the workspace. ChatGPT may ask you to confirm an action before it writes or changes something, depending on the app’s permissions. A few requests to start with:
- List my Nodary projects and the documents that changed this week.
- Read the onboarding guide in the Team project and turn its open questions into a checklist.
- Write a summary of the notes below, file it under Meetings and link it to the roadmap.
No API key for ChatGPT
ChatGPT connects with OAuth only: it cannot send an API key. Use the sign-in above, which needs nothing copied.
If something does not work
- Plugins offers no Add custom MCP server: your plan or your workspace’s settings do not allow it. Ask an admin; on Enterprise and Edu, they grant the Create plugins with MCPs permission.
- A tool Nodary added does not appear: ChatGPT keeps a snapshot of a server’s tools. Ask an admin to refresh the workspace’s app in ChatGPT’s app settings.
- ChatGPT reads but never writes: on Pro, custom MCP servers have read and fetch permissions only.
- A first request answered 401 is expected: it tells the client where to sign in.
- quota_locked: the workspace is above the free plan after its trial and is locked until the owner subscribes. It works again at once after that.
- billing_locked: a payment failed, so the workspace is locked until the owner settles it in the workspace’s billing settings. It works again once the payment goes through.
- workspace_suspended: Nodary has suspended the workspace, so nothing reaches it, agents included. The owner can write to support@nodary.ai.
- workspace_required: the connection reaches several workspaces, so name the one to work in, or connect again and tick only one.
Questions
Does connecting ChatGPT cost anything?
Not on Nodary’s side. The MCP server is in every plan, Free included within its limits, and ChatGPT spends no Comets: Comets count Studio AI only. Your ChatGPT plan decides whether you can add the server.
Why does ChatGPT not see a tool Nodary just added?
ChatGPT keeps a snapshot of the tools a server offered when it was connected or published. Ask an admin of your ChatGPT workspace to refresh the app in its settings, and the new tools appear.
Can I use Nodary in ChatGPT on my phone?
No. OpenAI states that custom MCP servers work on ChatGPT on the web only.
Can ChatGPT delete or overwrite my documents?
Only where your role lets you, and a change can be put back: each editing session of up to ten minutes makes a version, and so does every agent write. A document keeps its 50 newest versions by people and its 50 newest by agents (an agent’s never push out people’s), which you compare and restore, and a deleted document comes back for 30 days. Share links, access, members, roles, keys, billing and deleting a project stay human decisions: no agent can do them.
How do I disconnect it?
In Nodary, open Profile, Security, Connected apps and disconnect it: it stops at once. In ChatGPT, remove the plugin from Plugins. A key is revoked under Profile, API keys and MCP, and owners and admins can revoke any key of the workspace in its settings, under MCP.
Does Nodary use my documents to train AI?
No. Nodary does not use workspace content to train AI models. What ChatGPT does with what it reads is set by its maker’s own terms.
